Founded on the 7th February 1980, by initiative of Professor Augusto Vintém, the Portalegre Choir had its first public presentation on the 23rd May of that year, in a concert which took place in the Santa Clara Convent, integrated in the Celebrations of the City Day. The Choir was conducted by Augusto Vintém from its foundation until 1982. From 1982 to 1984 it was conducted by Priest Tarcísio, and it was again conducted by Augusto Vintém until 1990. In 1990, Professors Domingos Redondo and Joaquim Correia took in their hands the musical conduction and, since 1995, this responsability belongs to Domingos Redondo.

Since 1983, the Choir organized, every year, at Christmas, concerts related to this festivity in several parishes of the Portalegre Council and in Councils of the Portalegre District. Among these concerts stands out the traditional concert in the Portalegre Cathedral.

Every year two choirs meetings take place, one with foreign choirs and the other as anniversary concert.

The activities of the Choir were declared of recognized cultural interest, by the Culture State Secretary, in 1989.

In May 2000, during the Celebrations of the City Day, the Choir was distinguished with the Municipal Merit Silver Medal, given by the Portalegre City Counsel, for the twenty years of cultural activity.

In 2002, was created the internet page and the presentation of its site was done during the Celebration of the 23rd anniversary of the Choir, on February 8th 2003.

The Choir is composed by around sixty members of the most different occupations and ages, the majority of them without musical education, who have the same passion for music and singing.

In the last 35 years, the Choir has been taking part in a high number of concerts in almost every district of the country, including the Autonomous Regions of Açores and Madeira, and abroad.

In 2014, with some members of the Choir, was created the Cante Alentejano group called “Os Lagóias1”, and its first public presentation took place in the Christmas concert organized by the Choir. In this concert also participated the “Grupo de Cantares de Évora”, promotor of the “Os Lagóias” group.


In 1985, the Choir recorded its first LP and, in 1998, its voices were once again recorded in a CD with the title “The best amateur Choirs in the Region”, together with other Choirs of Alentejo.

In 1987 the Choir participated in a RTP TV programme, and once again in 1997, at Christmas time.

In May 1993, the Choir organized the First Choirs Meeting of Alentejo, with the participation of eight choirs.

In 1995, with the collaboration of the Évora Professional Orchestra conducted by Maestro Nicolay Laloy, the Choir produced Priest Espanca's Missa Brevis, with two concerts, one in Évora, the other in Portalegre.

The Choir participated in concerts in the majestic Roman Theatre of Mérida and in the Sanlúcar Cathedral, in Barrameda (Cádiz).

In March 1997, the Choir acted in France, in the region of Brie-Paris, repeating the performance in June 2000.

In September 2003, it participated in the Second Choral Music International Festival, which took place in Ourense – Galicia – Spain.

In March 1997, the Choir began the Celebration of the 25th anniversary with a photographic exhibition “25 years singing...”, showing the several places where it acted, in Portugal and abroad.

On June 28th 2006, in the cloister of the Santa Clara Convent in Portalegre, there was a concert     celebrating the hundredth anniversary of Fernando Lopes Graça's birth, performing only works of this musician.

In October 2009, the Choir performed a concert at the Palácio de Belém, celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Museu da Presidência da República.

In November 2009, the Choir participated in the XV International Choral Event “Tierra de Barros”, in Villafranca de los Barros (Ciudad de la Musica), Spain, obtaining the best habanera interpretation award.

In July 2011, it participated in the Corale Verona Garda Estate Festival (Italy).

The Choir also participated in the First Arronches Sacral Music Festival, in April 2012. On May 19th, it organized  the First Iberian Choirs Meeting, with the participation of the Sociedade Coral Gracienda (Barcelona) and Coral D. Benito. In June of the same year, the Choir went to Barcelona, invited by the Sociedade Coral of this town. On December 15th, it performed, with the Banda Filarmónica Veirense, a Christmas Concert, in the Matrix Church of Veiros.

Curriculum of the Maestro

Domingos Redondo was born in Portalegre.

He started his music studies at the Conservatório Regional de Castelo Branco, in 1976, and there he concluded the Singing Superior Course.

He studied with the professors Helena Pina Manique and Eugénia Claro and, later on, with Maestro Amador Cortez Medina and Raquel d'Anrique, with whom he performed some public concerts.

He was co-founder  of the Conservatório Regional de Portalgre, where he taught the subjects Musical Education and Singing, activity he left in 1993.

He was a member of the Portalegre music group “Quarteto do Sol”, as a singer and a composer, group which produced a CD.

He attended, during November and December 2000, the 3rd Choral Conduction and Vocal Technics Course, organized by INATEL, and he worked with professors Teresita Gutierrez Marques, José Paulo Brandão and Luís Bragança Gil.

He is a Music Teacher at the Agrupamento de Escolas do Bonfim, in Portalegre.

He is in the music direction of the Choir since 1990.
